The MetroWest Growth Management Committee (MWGMC) is a unique collaborative partnership. We serve the MetroWest region of Eastern Massachusetts, from I-95 to I-495 along the Route 9 corridor, by facilitating inter-local collaborative planning and problem solving to enhance the quality of life and economic competitiveness of the MetroWest region. MWGMC serves as a think tank and advocate for locally initiated regional solutions to policy and planning challenges shared by MetroWest communities.
Local leaders face significant challenges. Managing growth requires elected officials to balance new development, protect the environment, and fund municipal services – all while maintaining a community’s unique quality of life.
MAPC provided project funds under the District Local Technical Assistance Program to develop a clear understanding of the land use and growth potential within the Route 9 communities, and in particular the commercial areas accessing Route 9, so that the communities and state agencies can begin to evaluate options to increase mobility in this corridor.
MAPC and MWGMC staff assisted Southborough, Framingham, Natick and Wellesley by developing a buildout analysis for the Route 9 corridor, which was completed in December 2008 with the assistance of the community planners. The buildout files are hyperlinked in the table below.
“It is much too easy for towns in New England to think like they’re islands, so it is extremely important to have organizations like MetroWest Growth Management that cross town borders.” Karen Spilka, State Senator
MWGMC increases the capacity of local leaders to develop and implement growth management strategies that are effective, sustainable, and equitable. Formed in 1985, MWGMC is the oldest of the eight subregions of our regional planning agency, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC).
